Hazardous Area Gas Monitoring

Monitoring process areas for hazardous gas is nothing new to most process industries - Your Sulfur Complex is no different. Hydrogen Sulfide, Sulfur Dioxide, and combustible gases are ever-present in Sulfur Block facilities.

Detection of latent fugitive emissions, pump and equipment seals, ground concentration modeling of stack emissions, and evaluation of special hazards in analyzer shelters and unit control enclosures are just a few things we consider in the design of your area monitoring systems.

Comprehensive area monitoring systems and personnel exposure protection are critical to all unit operations in your Sulfur facility. The low exposure thresholds of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide often require a layered protection strategy.

Combining portable personal gas detection monitors with fixed area monitors and local audible + visual alarms, combined with routine calibration and maintenance schedules, allows operators to effectively monitor your facility and help protect your personnel from exposure.

H2S and SO2 can evolve from numerous sources in your Sulfur Block. The most common exposure can be from fugitive emissions around valve seals, pump seals, and other normally closed vents. Other, less apparent sources should also be considered, including abnormal flow through blower air intakes and undetected small leaks in confined spaces such as analyzer cabinets and control enclosures.

Legacy units with relatively short vent and incinerator stacks may benefit from dispersion modeling to determine if H2S from upset conditions can form and return to ground level at concentrations above the permitted exposure limits.

Whether it is integrating area monitoring into your existing plant safety system or providing stand-alone detection and annunciation systems with audible and visual notifications – Principal Technology’s engineering and design team has the experience and know-how to help you design a comprehensive area monitoring system.
