Thermal Oxidizers and Incinerators

Thermal Oxidizers and Incinerators are a crucial last step in many facilities. The PTI team provides the know-how and experience from process engineering to determine the residence time and temperature required, refractory design, burner management and safety control systems, to designing for your fabrication and constructibility challenges.

Whether it is a small, vertical natural draft system or a large capacity forced draft unit with integral waste heat recovery, contact us today to discuss your project.

Thermal Oxidizers (also known as Incinerators in many legacy plants) are an essential component that, when designed properly, provide environmental control by oxidizing hazardous and residual compounds found in many process gas streams.

Our T.O. system approach tackles all disciplines of the technical design required for your project:

    • Process Engineering – Determining your feed rates and compositions along with the target constituent gases is the key first step in Thermal Oxidizer design. Our team can help model your system and then use this critical data to determine the optimum burner duty, target operating temperatures and residence time, as well as the required excess combustion air needed to meet your emission goals.
    • Mechanical and Structural Engineering – Once our process engineering team has established the parameters for your project, our Mechanical and Structural design team takes the ball to complete the system layout, burners, blowers, and boiler specifications as needed and complete the structural design in accordance with your local codes, ASCE 7, ASME STS-1, ASME Section I, ASME Section VIII, and other applicable standards.
    • Instrumentation and Controls – Our controls team brings their expertise in fuel train design, burner management and safety control systems, as well as Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEMS) and Stack Velocity measurement, to your project. BMS systems most commonly designed to NFPA 86 standards and/or safety shutdown systems complying with current process industry standards, including ISA S84 and, IEC 61508, IEC 61511. Our CEMS project portfolio includes traditional stack flue gas composition analyzer systems and oxygen analysis coupled with stack velocity and temperature measurement where required to determine mass emission rates for your plant.

PTI’s project resume includes the turn-key design, build, and installation of many T.O.s ranging from self-supporting natural draft units to fully modular forced draft systems incorporating horizontal furnace chambers with integral waste heat recovery boilers.

In addition to our turn-key, design-build projects, our process and controls engineering teams have the expertise to support your Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO), recuperative and catalytic TO systems.

Whether you need consulting support, a Burner Management or Safety System Upgrade, or a new design-build Thermal Oxidizer system, the PTI team is ready to discuss the scope and details for your project.
